With the 28th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, the Milwaukee Brewers selected LHP Ethan Small out of Mississippi State University.
Small is a strange pitching prospect in the draft because he is not a guy that is lighting up the radar. His fastball is a low 90’s offering, but the movement and plane he gets on it makes it play up quite a bit with most scouts thinking that it is his best pitch. His changeup is his second best pitch and is an above average one that plays well off of his deceptive fastball. He does have a curve ball, although it lags behind his other two pitches.
The downside here is that he does have a Tommy John on his record which is always something you wonder about. There is also the fact that while his fastball has tricked college hitters, it is very debatable as to whether or not that is going to work against professionals without his secondaries improving significantly.
