With the 8th selection in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Colorado Rockies selected OF Benny Montgomery from Red Land High School in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania.
Montgomery is a bit of a gamble as a high school position player who’s still very raw as a hitter, but he has one of the best pure skill sets of anyone in this draft. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound 18-year-old flashes elite speed and has major power potential, though he’s struggled to this point to tap into that power in game action. While it’s possible that he could outgrow center field, he’s good enough defensively to have a chance to stick at the position, and at the very least he looks like he can be a Joey Gallo-type player who plays great defense at a corner despite being bigger than the average outfielder.
While Montgomery is a high-risk, high-reward pick, he has a real chance to be one of the most impactful players in this draft class if he’s properly developed.
