With the 28th pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Tampa Bay Rays selected shortstop Carson Williams out of Torrey Pines High School in California.

The 2021 MLB Draft is shaping up to be the class of the shortstop, particularly on the prep side. While Carson Williams wasn’t a part of that top tier of shortstops that were littered through the first round, the Rays clearly liked what they saw out of him and there is plenty to like.

While Carson doesn’t have a big carrying tool per se, one thing that stands out with him is his power from the right hand side of the plate. He also has a great feel for hitting and is not afraid to hit the ball with authority the other way. The issue is that there is a decent chance that he won’t stick at shortstop. He is plenty athletic and has a good glove and arm, but most scouts think he will end up moving over to third base as he fills out his 6’2 frame.
