New York makes their big move, giving up three major prospects in the process.

The Yankees have acquired right-hander Sonny Gray and international bonus money from the Athletics for outfielder Dustin Fowler, shortstop Jorge Mateo and right-hander James Kaprielian, according to Jack Curry of YES Network and Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

New York has been targeting Gray in talks for weeks, being cited as the favorite to land Gray throughout the weekend. The right-hander drew interest from a ton of teams, with the Brewers, Cubs, Braves, Padres, Astros and others all being involved in talks for him.

Gray, 27, is under club control for two seasons after this one, giving the Yankees a proven rotation option for more than two seasons. He become half of a formidable 1-2 duo with Luis Severino in 2018 and 2019 with CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka potentially departing in free agency this winter.

For now, Gray joins Severino, Sabathia, Tanaka, Jordan Montgomery and fellow newcomer Jaime Garcia in a Yankees rotation that recently lost Michael Pineda for the rest of the season. Gray owns a 3.43 ERA and 3.24 FIP in 16 starts this season, rebounding after a rough start to enhance his trade value tremendously with a strong recent stretch.

Gray is the fifth significant addition for the first-place Yankees this month, joining Garcia, Todd Frazier, David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle. He joins Sean Doolittle, Ryan Madson and Adam Rosales out the door in Oakland, where the A’s have embarked on yet another rebuild.

Fowler appears to be the prize of the package for the Athletics, as he was recently ranked as the no. 89 prospect in baseball by Baseball America. The outfielder, of course, suffered a gruesome knee injury in his major-league debut with New York late last month and will miss significant time.

Fowler owns a .293/.329/.542 line in 70 games at Triple-A this season and projects as a future starting outfielder for Oakland. The former 18th-round pick (2013) is a five-tool player with highly regarded speed and defense.

Mateo, 22, recently came in as the no. 8 prospect in New York’s strong system (via MLB.com). He has hit .258/.318/.438 in 99 games between Hi-A and Double-A this season but has seen his stock drop rapidly over the last two seasons. Mateo has excellent speed (leading to 39 steals this season) and could project as a second baseman or center-fielder in the majors.

Kaprielian, 23, is a 6-foot-4 righty who was taken with the no. 16 overall pick in 2015 out of UCLA. He is out for the entire season due to Tommy John surgery and has only registered 29 minor-league innings since being drafted, but is still viewed as a high-ceiling arm due to his college performance and draft position. He was recently ranked as New York’s no. 12 prospect, via MLB.com.

New York has now traded a bevy of young players this month, with Blake Rutherford, Ian Clarkin, Tito Polo, Zack Littell and Dietrich Enns joining Fowler, Mateo and Kaprielian leaving town. The Yankees still have top prospects Gleyber Torres, Chance Adams and Estevan Florial for their future along with young players Aaron Judge and Clint Frazier.

The clubs continue to discuss the deal with less than seven hours to go before the trade deadline.

The Yankees and Athletics are “close enough to get over the hump” on a Sonny Gray deal by 4 p.m. ET, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick. Crasnick adds that finalizing the deal will “still take some compromise.”

The clubs have been discussing Gray for days and were reportedly progressing toward a deal early this weekend, but the talks seem to have hit an impasse Sunday. Oakland is likely looking for a package centered around outfield prospect Estevan Florial, with the other prospects potentially involved in a prospective deal still undecided.

Gray has also been linked to the Dodgers, Brewers, Cubs, Braves and Padres, though New York is the most motivated suitor and should be considered the favorite. Oakland could keep Gray and try once again to trade him this winter, though having nothing to show for a month of intense trade talks and rumors at the deadline may not be the most savvy move.

New York is said to be unwilling to move top young players Clint Frazier and Gleyber Torres in a deal for Gray.

The sides could come to agreement on a deal by the end of Sunday.

The Yankees are in the lead to land Athletics righty Sonny Gray and are optimistic about getting a deal done, according to a multiple reports.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the sides are “heavily engaged” in talks Sunday and that there appears to be an “excellent chance” that the deal gets done.

Initial reports indicated that Oakland was asking for Gleyber Torres or Clint Frazier in talks with New York, though the A’s have made concessions, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick. A deal centered around outfield prospect Estevan Florial may make sense considering the A’s preference to add a future center-fielder and New York’s surplus of young outfielders.

Talks surrounding Gray appear to be heating up, with Oakland announcing that the righty is now slated to start on Monday instead of Sunday. There’s no reason for the A’s to risk injury a day before the non-waiver deadline, especially considering how high Gray’s value is at this point.

Other clubs remain involved in the mix at this point, though FOX’s Ken Rosenthal reports that two oft-mentioned teams, the Astros and Brewers, are not “serious players” at this point. A major-league source said Saturday that the Braves remain interested in the righty, though the club is reportedly not willing to deal Ronald Acuna in a potential trade. The Cubs, Mariners and Padres have all been involved as well, though the Yankees appear to be the clear front-runner.

Gray is expected to be dealt before 4 p.m. ET on Monday and is considered the top controllable starter left on the board. The Yankees already acquired Jaime Garcia in a three-player deal with the Twins on Sunday.

As the Dodgers look to make a big splash before the deadline, they’re zeroing in on three star pitchers.

As Ken Rosenthal of FOX and MLB Network reports, the Dodgers have zeroed in on Rangers starter Yu Darvish, Athletics starter Sonny Gray, and Orioles starter Zach Britton as they look to upgrade their pitching staff at the deadline. Rosenthal adds that their decision will “likely hinge on asking prices,” which seems to indicate that they’ll try as hard as they can to make a major upgrade without giving up star prospects like Alex Verdugo and Walker Buehler.

Darvish would likely make the most sense for the Dodgers, as he’s the only rental of the three and thus would prevent the Dodgers from having to add more payroll beyond 2017. With Friday’s news that teams spending over $237 million will be hit with a 42.5 percent tax on top of the competitive balance tax and have their first-round pick dropped 10 spots, this would seem to be a rather significant concern for Los Angeles, which has a payroll exceeding $251 million this season. Since he’s on an expiring contract, Darvish would also likely cost the least, though there have been mixed messages about whether Texas is fully intent on trading him.

Gray, who is arbitration-eligible through 2019, would be an impactful addition to the Dodgers’ rotation, providing protection in case Clayton Kershaw’s recovery is slower than expected while also lessening their need to rely on mid-rotation types like Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu. He’d also provide some right-handed balance to their rotation, which is mostly left-handed when healthy with guys like Kershaw, Ryu, Alex Wood, and Rich Hill. But he won’t come cheap, and young players like Verdugo, Buehler, Yadier Alvarez, and Julio Urias would almost surely have to be part of the trade talks.

Britton could provide a major upgrade to the Dodgers’ already-dominant bullpen, combining with Kenley Jansen to form a shutdown late-inning duo. He still has a year of arbitration left, but he’s already making $11.4 million this year and is due for another major raise this winter, so he would even further strain the Dodgers’ payroll. And while he’s collected 55 straight saves, he’s actually been rather shaky this year, posting a 3.50 ERA with a .342 opponent batting average, 14 strikeouts, and eight walks in 18 innings while dealing with a nagging left forearm strain. The Dodgers might want to think twice before dealing key future assets in exchange for him.

The Sonny Gray sweepstakes are quickly becoming an all-out bidding war, with the Yankees currently out front.

UPDATE: The clubs are not yet close to a deal because the A’s want either Gleyber Torres or Clint Frazier, who the Yankees don’t want to trade, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Oakland is setting a high price in talks for Gray, also showing interest in Yankees prospects Jorge Mateo, James Kaprielian and Estevan Florial.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

ORIGINAL: With the trade deadline closing in very quickly, it is practically inevitable that the Athletics will deal right-hander Sonny Gray. Now, it is being reported by Bob Klapisch of USA Today that the Yankees are “leading the pack” in these trade talks despite being “a long way” from the finish line.

The Yankees have been in the market for young and controllable starting pitchers, which is why they were very much in on Jose Quintana before he was dealt to the Cubs. Gray, 27, fits the mold for the Yankees as he is under team control through 2019.

Gray is having a solid bounce-back year with a 6-5 record, 3.43 ERA, 3.25 FIP and 1.18 WHIP. He has also been very impressive over his last six starts with a 4-2 record, 1.37 ERA and .164 BAA.

There have been a number of reports linking Gray and the Yankees over the past couple weeks with the Athletics scouting Yankees’ minor league affiliates, and naming their price for Gray. The two teams have also been making progress towards a potential Gray/Yonder Alonso package.

Though Yankees may have concerns about Gray’s injury past and inconsistencies, they have an obvious need in the rotation and are being the most aggressive team at the moment. In addition to the Yankes, the Athletics are also in trade talks with the Dodgers and Astros, who they believe have the pieces to make a deal for Gray before the July 31 deadline.

The Athletics have plenty of leverage in these trade talks with three contending teams bidding heavily for Gray’s services. Gray would be a welcomed addition in pinstripes this season, and for year’s to come.

The Dodgers are “increasingly confident” about their chances to land one of Sonny Gray, Yu Darvish or Justin Verlander before the trade deadline, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi.

Los Angeles has the prospects to get any deal done, with Walker Buehler, Alex Verdugo, Yadier Alvarez and Willie Calhoun headlining its system. The club, which leads the majors with a 71-31 record, is known to be searching for starting pitching help in the wake of Clayton Kershaw’s injury.

Gray is the most likely of the trio to get dealt, with the Yankees and Astros leading the pack and the Brewers, Braves and Mariners serving as other suitors. The chances of Darvish being moved are about 50/50, but the Dodgers would be considered a major favorite if Texas decides to move him. Verlander’s situation is complicated due to his large contract and no-trade clause, though the Dodgers reportedly haven’t shown much interest in him to this point.

Adding a front-line starter like Gray, Darvish or Verlander would add a strong arm to a World Series contender that already has All-Stars Kershaw and Alex Wood headlining a rotation mix that includes Rich Hill, Hyun-jin Ryu, Kenta Maeda and the injured Brandon McCarthy and Scott Kazmir.

At this point, Darvish may be the most likely of the three to end up with the Dodgers — if the Rangers do in fact decide to move him. Darvish, a pending free agent, actually increased the chances he’d be dealt by Monday with a terrible performance against the Marlins last night.

Washington is content with the starting group it has, per reports.

The Nationals are not pursuing high-end starters like Yu Darvish or Sonny Gray, according to FOX’s Ken Rosenthal. Previous reports linked Washington to both righties in the wake of Stephen Strasburg’s injury, but Rosenthal reports that the club is not pursuing pitchers at that level.

Strasburg is slated to miss only one start, with prospect Erick Fedde taking over in his place. The Nats, who have a stable of prospects led by outfielder Victor Robles, likely had the pieces to get a deal done for Gray or Darvish, but appear content with moving forward with their group of Strasburg, Fedde, Max Scherzer, Tanner Roark, Gio Gonzalez and Edwin Jackson.

Gray is almost a lock to be traded before Monday’s deadline and has drawn interest from the Yankees, Brewers, Mariners, Astros and Braves most prominently. But, the Mariners add some intrigue to this because they are only 2 1⁄2 games back of a wild card spot and Dipoto has already made two trades to try to help them make a run at the postseason. He acquired right-handed reliever David Phelps from the Marlins for four prospects -- outfielder Brayan Hernandez and pitchers Brandon Miller, Lukas Schiraldi and Pablo Lopez. Dipoto then traded prospect Tyler O'Neill to the Cardinals for left-hander Marco Gonzales.

Even if they don’t make it this year, the Mariners would have a quality staff coming back, with Gray, Felix Hernandez and James Paxton leading the way. Regardless, Dipoto will still be looking for ways to add controllable starters like he did with Gonzales last week.
