Already nursing a sore shoulder, Scherzer has now been scratched from his Wednesday start.

Detroit Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer injured his right ankle during his team's postseason celebration Monday night and will not make his scheduled start on Wednesday, reports Tom Gage of the Detroit News:

Scherzer's ankle was reportedly stepped on by a fellow Tiger amidst the on-field dog pile formed following their division-clinching victory over the Kansas City Royals. The injury is not thought to be serious -- just a bit of swelling -- but it is enough to force Scherzer to miss his start Wednesday.

The 28-year-old right-hander had been nursing a strained deltoid muscle in his throwing shoulder over the past few weeks -- forcing him to miss two of his last three starts -- but Scherzer was reportedly good to go before his ankle was rolled Monday night. A Tuesday throwing session on flat ground resulted in no shoulder pain, but the ankle was still tender.

Scherzer is expected to return at some point during the ALDS, but the missed start makes his timeline unclear. Luis Marte will start in Scherzer's stead Wednesday for the Tigers' regular-season finale.

If Scherzer is feeling no ill-effects from yesterday’s 10-minute throwing routine, he’ll pitch a full bullpen session tonight before the Tigers’ contest against the Kansas City Royals. Tonight’s bullpen would then determine the 28-year-old’s availability for Wednesday’s regular season finale.

While Wednesday is Scherzer’s next scheduled start, Tigers manager Jim Leyland has said he won’t have the right-hander pitch if the team has already clinched the AL Central. If that’s the case, Drew Smyly wills start Wednesday, allowing Scherzer to prepare for the ALDS, according to Beck.

On the season Scherzer has maintained an ERA of 3.82 over 31 starts spanning 183 2/3 innings with a league-leading 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings compared to 2.8 walks per nine innings.

Scherzer has been dealing with shoulder fatigue since a Sept. 18 start against the Oakland Athletics. The ailment forced him from that appearance after only two innings, and it impacted him Sunday when he pitched against the Minnesota Twins.

Scherzer told reporters that he was pain-free for Sunday’s start, but he aggravated his injury during a side session on Tuesday. On the season the right-hander has posted an ERA of 3.82 over 31 appearances with a league-leading 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings compared to 2.8 walks per nine innings.

The Tigers have announced that Drew Smyly will start in Scherzer’s place Friday in Minnesota. Scherzer’s next turn would come during the club’s regular season finale against the Kansas City Royals, but it’s unknown if the 28-year-old will be available at that time.
