AA dishes on moving his manager and how the deal went down.

Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos held a conference call Sunday to discuss the trade that sent manager John Farrell and reliever David Carpenter to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for shortstop Mike Aviles over the weekend. Among other things, Anthopoulos spoke about the process of the deal and how things did not go as well as he hoped, reports Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald:

"I thought there was, to be completely candid, gamesmanship and a lot of things that went on from a negotiating standpoint, not on our end," Anthopoulos said.

"But I thought there were a lot of things that were coming out that were completely false. We’re pretty good at not putting things out there in the media, or leaking things, or saying things. There was just a lot.

There were some things, we don’t know where it came from or how it started, but probably (the negotiations) didn’t go as smoothly as we think it could have."

Anthopoulos stated that he was unhappy about the false rumors, and that information on the deal was announced prior to its official but completion, but that there is nothing to be done about it. He added that the Jays have now granted all of their coaches the opportunity to seek employment with other teams -- some may join Farrell in Boston -- and that 1B/DH Adam Lind was never a part of the compensation discussion.

If the Blue Jays had not added David Carpenter into the deal, Anthopoulos said the team would have likely removed him from the 40-man roster.

Talk of compensation has moved past preliminary negotiations.

The Boston Red Sox have moved past the "preliminary" stage of talks with the Toronto Blue Jays in regards to compensation for acquiring manager John Farrell, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe:

Until yesterday, the Blue Jays had made no indication of their interest in parting with their second-year manager. Now that talks have moved beyond a preliminary discussion, however, it seems very probable that the Blue Jays could be on the hunt for a new manager by the end of the month.

Farrell still has one year remaining on his three-year deal with Toronto, meaning that the Red Sox will have to offer some sort of compensation to steal him away to Boston. As the Blue Jays will need to begin their manager search as quickly as possible if Farrell does depart, it is unlikely that the compensation process will drag out very long, if at all, like it did last year when Theo Epstein left for Chicago.

If the Red Sox cannot come to an agreement with Farrell and the Blue Jays, they have four other managerial candidates -- all of whom have already been interviewed --- waiting in the wings to take the job. Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach, Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus and Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale are the four other candidates competing for the position.

Farrell has long been speculated to be Boston's top choice to fill the managerial vacancy, but the Blue Jays have not budged from their stance that he is unavailable. Toronto even created an organization rule last season when the Red Sox pursued Farrell the first time that all coaches under contract are not allowed to interview for other positions.

Ben Cherington and the Red Sox brass are still hopeful that they can come to an agreement to get Farrell out of the final year of his contract with the Blue Jays by offering the team player compensation. Earlier reports speculated that compensation for Farrell would likely be a "decent player", but as the time wears on it is likely the price will get steeper.

Interviews for Boston's manager job continued Monday with Pena and Hale.

The Boston Red Sox interviewed former Royals manager and current Yankees bench coach Tony Pena on Monday, and will interview Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale on Tuesday in their continued search for a new manager, reports Tim Britton of the Providence Journal:

The 55-year-old Peña has previous managerial experience in Kansas City. At the helm of the Royals from 2002 to 2005, Peña put together a 198-285 record. In 2003, he led Kansas City to its only winning season in the last 19 years...

Hale just completed his first season on Baltimore's staff after spending the previous six with Terry Francona in Boston as a third-base and bench coach. Even so, Hale did not receive an interview last offseason to succeed Francona.

Both Pena and Hale have significant professional managerial experience -- and both have Manager of the Year trophies to their names -- though Hale has never managed at the big league level. The 51-year-old managed in the minor leagues for eight years, five of those coming in the Red Sox organization.

In addition to manning the helm in Kansas City, Pena also spent four years managing minor league squads. The Yankees bench coach was able to interview yesterday as his team traveled to Detroit for Game 3 of the ALCS on Tuesday.

A year ago, the Red Sox attempted to interview Wallach for the managerial vacancy but their timing as well as language in his contract prevented that from getting anywhere.

"Certainly I’m interested," said Wallach this afternoon. "This is what I’ve wanted to do and what I’ve been preparing to do for some time."

As Wallach's contract with the Dodgers is expiring there is nothing to keep him from taking the job in Boston this time around. In addition to playing for seventeen seasons, the five-time All-Star third baseman managed the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate from 2009-2010.

The Red Sox are expected to begin their interview process within the week, with former catcher Brad Ausmus and Blue Jays manager John Farrell presumed to be the other top candidates vying for the job -- though Farrell's candidacy is not without complication.

Toronto brass says it has no intention of letting John Farrell join the Red Sox.

The Toronto Blue Jays have no desire to let manager John Farrell join their division rivals in Boston, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports:

Blue Jays people are still suggesting to reporters and baseball people behind the scenes that they have no intention of letting their manager, John Farrell, go to the rival Red Sox.

The Blue Jays made it policy last year when the Red Sox came calling for Farrell that they don't allow their employees to move for lateral jobs.

While the Red Sox have made no formal indication of their desire to take Farrell from Toronto, their interest in hiring the Blue Jays' skipper has been reported for some time. It has been suggested that if the Blue Jays do in fact part with Farrell that it will cost the Red Sox at least a "decent" player.

Heyman suggests that the Blue Jays should at least listen in on what Boston has to offer in exchange for Farrell, as the last two years have not exactly gone as well as hoped for in Toronto. Farrell has one year left on his contract with the Blue Jays, reasonably making this offseason the last chance Toronto has to get anything in return for his services.

The Red Sox may have to pay a steep cost -- likely a "decent player" -- if they want to pull pitching coach John Farrell away from the Blue Jays to manage in Boston next season, a source has told Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald:

If the Red Sox [team stats] really want John Farrell to be their next manager, it’s going to cost them...

[A] major league source said yesterday that team president Paul Beeston would demand compensation for allowing Farrell out of the final year of his contract, especially to join an AL East rival.

While which players would fit the moniker "decent" in the eyes of the Blue Jays is not known, the asking price is not expected to be anything extraordinary.

Receiving a player for a manager who is under contract for with team is not without precedent. The Marlins traded two mid-level prospects to the White Sox last year for Ozzie Guillen's services, and the Tampa Bay Rays traded Randy Winn to the Mariners in 2002 in order to have Lou Pinella at the helm in St. Petersburg.

The Red Sox have yet to officially contact Farrell regarding their open manager position, but he is speculated to be the top candidate for the job. Farrell worked for four years in the Red Sox organization as their pitching coach before leaving to manage in Toronto.
