Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he expects Alex Rodriguez to be his starting third baseman next season.

With New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez in the middle of several rumors, manager Joe Girardi told reporters, including Dan Martin of The New York Post, that he expects the veteran to be his starting third baseman next season:

"I expect Alex to be our every day third baseman," Girardi said at Yankee Stadium Wednesday. "What’s he gonna have to show me? That he’s healthy and ready to go and that we have no concerns if we put him out there every day."

Following the Yankees elimination from the American League Division Series, rumors began spreading that the team was considering trading Rodriguez. In the speculated deals, the Yankees would pick up a large portion of A-Rod’s salary to help facilitate a trade.

However, given his 10-and-5 rights, Rodriguez has the power to veto any trade proposal. It was rumored that he would consider a trade if it would be to a contender, but he later denied this and said he expected to be back with the Yankees next season.

Rodriguez is owed $114 million over the next five seasons, and he once again experienced decline this year. The 37-year-old hit .272/.353/.430 with 17 doubles and 18 home runs over 463 at-bats.

Speculation of A-Rod's immediate departure from New York has been rampant over the last several days because of the third baseman's benching during the ALCS and unsubstantiated rumors of a possible trade to the Miami Marlins. Yankees GM Brian Cashman was quick to deny any dealings at all with the Marlins and that Girardi's decision to bench A-Rod was purely a baseball decision, it has not stopped others from adding to the rumor mill.

Buster Olney of ESPN reported Thursday that he expects Rodriguez to be traded "long before his contract expires in 2017." Some, like Bob Nightengale of USA Today, believe that A-Rod would be a good fit for the Los Angeles Angels in a swap for outfielder Vernon Wells, though Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com finds that suspect with third base prospect Kaleb Cowart quickly making his way through the Angels' farm system.

While it may not happen this offseason, Buster Olney says the Yankees will trade Alex Rodriguez before his contract expires.

The New York Yankees will probably discuss a trade involving Alex Rodriguez with the Miami Marlins, if they haven’t already, reports Buster Olney of ESPN. Olney believes Marlins left-hander Mark Buehrle could join right-hander Heath Bell in trade talks:

So, yes, the Yankees will probably talk to the Marlins and hold their own lawn sale, taking 10 cents on the dollar just to get rid of an outdated superstar. Mark Buehrle's contract is heavily backloaded, and he's overpriced, so maybe the Yankees will ask about the left-hander, or maybe they'll take Heath Bell in return just to make the money work out a little better.

It was reported yesterday that the Yankees and Marlins had discussed trade involving Rodriguez. One version of the deal had New York eating A-Rod’s remaining contract. Another had Bell and his remaining contract coming to the Yankees in exchange for Rodriguez and salary relief.

Olney believes Mark Buehrle and the $48 million remaining on his contract could also be involved in a potential trade.

While Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has shot down these initial rumors, Olney believes Rodriguez will be traded "long before his contract expires in 2017." The 37-year-old is owed $114 million over the next five seasons.

Olney expects the Yankees to handle the Rodriguez situation similarly to how they dealt with right-hander A.J. Burnett last winter. He says New York decided that relationship wouldn’t work anymore and they ate the salary they needed to in order to facilitate a trade.

Would the Yankees or Marlins be the winners of the proposed trade involving Alex Rodriguez?

Yesterday’s rumor involving a trade of New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez to the Miami Marlins caused quite a stir. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has since come out and denied the initial report, characterizing it as "not true."

Keith Olbermann, who published the initial report, shot back saying Cashman "may not know about any of this." Some around the game question the validity of the report, but do seem to think a change of scenery of some sort may be in store for the declining yet expensive Rodriguez.

One of the deals Olbermann posed would have Rodriguez shipped to Miami with New York picking up his entire remaining tab. That would be $114 million over five seasons.

The other version of the trade would see the Yankees eating less of A-Rod’s salary, but they would also take on the $27 million remaining on Marlins right-hander Heath Bell’s contract.

Considering the potential deals that have been reported, who would win? Also, which deal do you favor if you are the Yankees/Marlins?

Cashman stated that rumors of moving A-Rod to Florida are simply "not true".

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was quick to shoot down Wednesday's rumor that the team was in discussions with the Miami Marlins to trade third baseman Alex Rodriguez, reports Bryan Hoch of MLB.com:

The report of discussions between the Yankees and Marlins, initially reported by Keith Olbermann of MLB.com, were said to involve several scenarios, one including Marlins reliever Heath Bell and another with Miami taking on nearly all of the $114 million still owed to Alex Rodriguez over the next five years.

Despite the denial by Cashman, Olbermann is sticking to his guns, claiming that the GM "may not know about any of this" and that Cashman "doesn’t make all the deals and some of them they don’t even give him a much of a heads-up on".

While Olbermann may have his sources, making a trade when one's team is in the midst of the playoffs is unprecedented and seems highly unlikely. That is not to say, however, that talks will not pick up between the two teams during the offseason.

The New York Yankees have held trade discussions involving third baseman Alex Rodriguez with the Miami Marlins, reports Keith Olbermann of MLB.com:

The New York Yankees have held discussions with the Miami Marlins about a trade involving their third baseman in crisis, Alex Rodriguez.

Sources close to both organizations tell Olbermann that one version of the potential deal would have the Yankees paying all of Rodriguez’s remaining salary. A-Rod is under contract for the next five seasons for a whopping total of $114 million.

Another version would see the Yankees pay less but take on reliever Heath Bell and the three years and $27 million remaining on his current contract. Olbermann notes there’s been no indication on how serious these discussions have or haven’t gotten, but one source said they believe the deal will eventually be made in some form.

Rodriguez is one of several highly-priced veterans currently on the Yankees' roster. His offensive production dropped off for the fifth season in a row in 2012, as the 37-year-old hit .272/.353/.430 with 17 doubles and 18 home runs over 463 at-bats.
