Bud Selig has approved the twelve-player trade that sends Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle to Toronto.

Commissioner Bud Selig finally approved the twelve-player megatrade between the Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Marlins on Monday night, six days after the initial agreement between the two clubs was made. There was some speculation that Selig could stop the trade from happening, but in the end Selig determined the move to be an exercise of "plausible baseball judgment":

"It is my conclusion that this transaction, involving established Major Leaguers and highly regarded young players and prospects, represents the exercise of plausible baseball judgment on the part of both Clubs, does not violate any express rule of Major League Baseball and does not otherwise warrant the exercise of any of my powers to prevent its completion," Selig said in a statement.

"It is, of course, up to the Clubs involved to make the case to their respective fans that this transaction makes sense and enhances the competitive position of each, now or in the future."

The now-official deal sends SS Jose Reyes, RHP Josh Johnson, RHP Mark Buehrle, OF Emilio Bonifacio and C John Buck to the Blue Jays for SS Adeiny Hechavarria, SS Yunel Escobar, RHP Henderson Alvarez, C Jeff Mathis, LHP Justin Nicolino, OF Jake Marisnick and RHP Anthony Desclafani.

The Marlins’ official reason for making the monster deal – just a year removed from moving into a new stadium and promising fans they would be competitive – was that they were a last place team and needed to bring in new blood in order to field a winning team, per Joe Frisaro of MLB.com:

"We’ve finished in last place the past two years, and that is unacceptable to our fans, to us as an organization, and to me," said Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria in a statement.

"We want to get back to our winning ways, and we want a winning baseball team for our fans. It’s incumbent on us to make the changes necessary to make us a winner again."

Miami may not be done clearing payroll for next season.

The Miami Marlins may not be done sending away their productive major leaguers. Right-hander Ricky Nolasco "will be next to go" in a trade, sources have told Joel Sherman of the New York Post:

The Marlins have already decreased their 2013 payroll $48 million in the last twenty-four hours. Moving Nolasco – who is owed $11.5 million next season -- to another club would make new acquisition Yunel Escobar the club’s highest paid player at just $5 million. Just yesterday the club had four players owed over $10 million.

Nolasco, 29, has spent his entire career in a Marlins uniform. Brought up for his first full season at just 23, the right-hander has never quite lived up to expectations, recording just one season (2008) with an above-average ERA+. Overall, Nolasco owns a 4.49 ERA, 2.1 BB/9 and 7.4 K/9 in his seven seasons with Miami.

The Miami Marlins made a whole bunch of changes and a whole bunch of promises before to the 2012 season in an attempt to rejuvenate their organization. But as things went south rather quickly, Jeffrey Loria and company have taken it upon themselves to wipe last season from the history books completely. Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Emilio Bonifacio and John Buck are all on their way north to Canada for a bunch of Blue Jays prospects and a few "meh" major leaguers.

For Michael Jong over at Fish Stripes, there’s no way to look at this deal, as a Marlins fan, and retain any faith that the organization will ever head in a new, positive direction:

There is no denying that there is one common theme about this Marlins trade, the one theme that you will hear echoed many times over in the next few days on this site and others: this is a fire sale.

This deal is like accomplishing the entire 2006 fire sale in one fell swoop, knocking out everyone with significant major league money and talent away in one massive, depressing trade. Never mind what the Marlins got in return…

This trade had very little to do with getting the best return and had everything to do with dumping the salary of 2012 alongside the memories of a broken season. The Marlins opted to burn the entire house down following a tragedy of a season rather than building upon what they had with measured intelligence…

And with that, the trust of the fan base, which was already beginning to be skeptical in the latter stages of 2012 as the team fielded a series of scrubs at various positions, has been completely shattered.

The Fish Stripes community mostly shared in Jong’s depression and frustration with the team:

Even Mets fans took the time to join in and commiserate:

Maybe someone can invest in a bullet train from Miami to St. Pete so fans can hop on the Rays bandwagon. I hear they need fans.

Christmas (…or Boxing Day?) has come early for Toronto Blue Jays fans. Just hours after word emerged that general manager Alex Anthopoulos was "itching" to pull off a trade for starting pitching, he (potentially*) pulled off one of the biggest trades in MLB history, acquiring Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Emilio Bonifacio and John Buck for a hodgepodge assortment of Blue Jays, young and old.

So what do Toronto fans think of their shiny new toys?

I think they like them.

At the moment, the trade has whopping 88% approval rating among the Bluebird Banter faithful. If they were to re-hold the presidential election today, I think it’s safe to assume that Anthopoulos would take all of Canada’s electoral votes in a landslide.

Here’s just a bit of the fan response for your perusal, because real-time reactions are the best:

I do suggest that some people put their clothes back on though. It can get cold up there...

As amazing and roster-shaking as this move is for both sides (sorry, Marlins fans), Anthopoulos may not be done yet. The Blue Jays still have four catchers on their 40-man roster, meaning that J.P. Arencibia, Bobby Wilson or the newly acquired John Buck could be on the move before too long (assuming Travis D’Arnaud’s place is safe).

*Still awaiting MLB approval, of course.

Stanton, 23, was drafted by the then-Florida Marlins in the 2nd round of the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft. As a pre-arbitration eligible player, Stanton is set to make a little under half a million -- a far cry from the ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY MILLION DOLLARS the Marlins will likely save by shipping three of their highest-paid players north.

If I'm the young star, I'd be pissed off too.

What he needs to remember is that the Marlins are exactly what we thought they were: a club that appears to be in bed with local officials, bilking locals out of tax dollars to build a stadium they probably didn't want, acquiring a bunch of players through free agency that didn't turn the club around the way they expected, and a club with a history of holding huge fire sales when they get bored.

All that said, it might be time to turn twitter off for a few days. Stanton clearly has no idea what's happening and is emotionally invested in the immediate. The Marlins have a decent track record of doing this and turning the whole ship right back around in a couple years.

The Marlins are receiving top outfield prospect Jake Marisnick and starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez as part of Tuesday evening's blockbuster trade with the Blue Jays.

The Miami Marlins' latest fire sale seems to be quite real on Tuesday evening as the club nears a blockbuster trade with the Toronto Blue Jays, but details are still pouring in regarding the trade. Though there are often complications with deals of this magnitude, it appears that the general framework of the trade can be summarized as such:

Toronto will acquire shortstop Jose Reyes, left-hander Mark Buehrle, right-hander Josh Johnson, catcher John Buck and utility man Emilio Bonifacio.

Miami will acquire right-hander Henderson Alvarez, left-hander Justin Nicolino, outfielder Jake Marisnick and shortstops Yunel Escobar and Adeiny Hechavarria.

Most of these details were reported by the FOX Sports duo of Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi, but ESPN's Buster Olney broke the news on Marisnick heading to Miami. If the deal is ultimately completed in its present form, the Blue Jays will be taking on roughly $166 million in guaranteed salaries.

A potentially huge trade is in the works that could send Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle to Toronto.

The Toronto Blue Jays are close to acquiring shortstop Jose Reyes, right-hander Josh Johnson and left-hander Mark Buehrle in a blockbuster trade with the Miami Marlins, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The scope of the deal would likely make it one of the biggest trades in recent memory if completed.

While it's unclear how close the trade is, it would certainly put a huge exclamation mark on Miami's latest fire sale just months after the team appeared to be turning in a new direction.

Last offseason, the Marlins spent millions acquiring big names to bolster their roster in anticipation of playing in a brand new stadium, but the spending generally didn't pay off as the club quickly fell out of contention. A classic Marlins fire sale has since ensued, with practically all of the team's highest-paid players being shipped off.

By acquiring Reyes, Johnson and Buehrle, the Blue Jays could be making a massive statement about just how serious they are as contenders. After finishing fourth in the AL East this year, GM Alex Anthopolous clearly isn't interested in standing pat.

Stay tuned for more, as this deal is still evolving and hasn't been completed.
