The Reds have hired a new manager and will look to steer their roster toward another run at the NL Central pennant.

Dusty Baker was fired after leading the Reds to a 90-win season and two of the last four NL Central pennants. His inability to lead them deep into the postseason is what ultimately did him in. Now Cincinnati will depend on former pitching coach Bryan Price to pilot the team.

The Reds have a potentially huge hole to fill if they fail to re-sign Shin-Soo Choo, which appears very likely. GM Walt Jocketty doesn't have a budget surplus to work with this offseason. That may be why Choo and Bronson Arroyo aren't expected back, and could be the main reason behind the Brandon Phillips trade rumors. Phillips is due $50M over the next 4 seasons and posted his worst OPS in ten years. In addition to his down year at the plate, he struggled to find a groove on the base paths, leading to just 5 stolen bases. But Phillips doesn't need to be a spectacular offensive player to provide value. He won his fourth Gold Glove this year (though the analytics crowd might argue Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney was better) and has been one of the most consistently solid fielders in the National League. But for the Reds, that contribution might not be enough to validate his relatively large salary.

More Reds stuff from Red Reporter: Why the Reds should trade Devin Mesoraco

Free agents

Bronson Arroyo, Shin-Soo Choo, Nick Masset, Manny Parra, Cesar Izturis, and Zach Duke

Letting Arroyo and Choo walk will undoubtedly aid the Reds in their efforts to sign Jay Bruce to an extension -- something the Reds are likely to pursue, according to Yahoo's Jeff Passan. He compares Bruce's contract situation to that of Troy Tulowitzki and Evan Longoria -- both players added years to their prior extensions at similar points in their careers. Arroyo's absence will open up a regular spot for Tony Cingrani -- who filled in admirably for an injured Johnny Cueto this season, and perhaps afford the team with the financial flexibility they'll need to sign Homer Bailey and Cueto to extensions as well. Choo will be greatly missed, but Billy Hamilton showed his potential during his brief stint in the majors. If he can maintain a solid OBP at the top of the order, the blow will be unquestionably lessened.

Needs

SS, OF, RP

Zack Cozart could very well get another chance at the everyday short stop gig again in 2014, but if the opportunity to improve there presents itself, the Reds will have to consider it. Their main concern will likely be in the outfield. Hamilton should see plenty of playing time in center and Bruce has right locked down, but left field was an area of weakness for Cincinnati in 2013. Ryan Ludwick, Xavier Paul, Chris Heisey, and Derrick Robinson are internal (and volatile) options that they could go with, but if they decide to focus their attention here, the market could reward them.

Trade Pieces

Phillips, Homer Bailey, Mike Leake, Ryan Hanigan, Devin Mesoraco, prospects

After the Reds signed Brayan Pena to kick off the offseason, rumors began circulating about the team possibly shopping Ryan Hanigan. While this is certainly a possibility, the potential return on Hanigan might not be proportionate to his value in Cincinnati. Devin Mesoraco on the other hand, might have enough former prospect clout to interest a few clubs. Hanigan is coming off of his worst season as a pro hitting just .198, but he still finished with a higher OBP than Mesoraco and Cincy values him at a level that reflects his career .359 OBP and solid defense.

Phillips, Leake and Bailey could bring back solid players, but the Reds could choose to keep them if the market doesn't play out the way they'd like it to. Trading a starter would open up a spot in the rotation for prospect Robert Stephenson and free them of another potentially expensive player. Bailey is primed for a significant raise through arbitration this offseason.

With a few key pitchers headed for the open market, Cleveland will look to their young arms for a return to the playoffs.

For Cleveland, this offseason is likely to look much different than last year. At least in regard to the free agent market. When they signed Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher for a combined $104M, they improved their roster and limited their future payroll flexibility simultaneously -- which is typically the case for big-ticket free agent signings. But it was a bold move by GM Chris Antonetti, one that paid off in the form of the team's first playoff appearance since 2007.

On the trade market, Antonetti could make a similar splash this winter. The Indians were part of three-team trade last winter that landed them Trevor Bauer and other players in exchange for Shin-Soo Choo. And in the coming weeks, he could shop Asdrubal Cabrera. They have two exceptional shortstops in their farm system and Cabrera was underwhelming in 2013. According to the Hardball Times' Jeff Moore, hyper-prospect Francisco Lindor could see time in the majors in 2014.

Ubaldo Jimenez, Scott Kazmir, Joe Smith, Matt Albers, Kelly Shoppach, Rich Hill, Chris Perez, and Jason Kubel

Losing two-fifths of their rotation might not hurt as much as it sounds like it would. The Indians have Bauer and Danny Salazar ready to step in for Jimenez and Kazmir. The rest of the rotation is set with Justin Masterson, Zack McAlister, and Corey Kluber. But losing Albers and Smith won't be easy for Cleveland to replace -- if they fail to re-sign them.

Needs

3B, SP, RP

Lonnie Chisenhall has struggled in the majors despite his career .411 slugging percentage. He was briefly sent to the minors last season and slashed .390/.456/.676, so the Indians might not be ready to give up on him yet. Though it has been frustrating for Chisenhall and Cleveland so far, and a change might benefit both parties at this point. The team could decide to bring in a veteran to help Mike Aviles fill in in the infield for 2014. The same goes for the rotation. A vet who could help eat up some innings would be useful in acclimating Salazar and Bauer to major league workloads.

The bullpen could probably use a shot in the arm. Chris Perez is already gone, and the club could lose a few others as well. Relief pitching was a strength for the Indians and they'll do their best to make sure that's the case again in 2014.

Trade Pieces

Asdrubal Cabrera, Lonnie Chisenhall, prospects

Trading Chisenhall or Cabrera would be selling low, but Cleveland might prefer that to waiting. Chisenhall will be arbitration eligible after the coming season and Cabrera is set to become a free agent in 2015. The return on either player wouldn't likely be what it could've been a few years ago. Nevertheless, a trade -- especially in Cabrera's case -- would be the best way to guarantee a consolation. If Cabrera stays with the team through 2014 and heads for free agency, the Indians will be faced with an difficult decision on whether or not to extend him a qualifying offer. Of course, that's highly dependent in his production next year.

Only Boston won more regular season games than the A's, but can their young rotation lead them to the playoffs again?

The A's have another impressive crop of young pitchers in majors. They seem to be set in the rotation for as long as GM Billy Beane decides to keep these guys around.

Sonny Gray, A.J. Griffin, Jarrod Parker, Dan Straily, and Tommy Milone could form a solid rotation. Beane might decide to bring in a veteran or two on a flier to ensure he doesn't have to rush anyone through the farm.

Brett Anderson could help as well, but Beane may try to move him due to his injury history, though he might still fetch something useful with his potential upside.

With Coco Crisp at the top of the order, and Yoenis Cespedes, Brandon Moss, and the staggering revelation that Josh Donaldson has become in the middle, the A's have a solid core of bats to work with.

More A's stuff from Athletics Nation: A's Nation 2013 Year-End Player Awards

Free agents

Grant Balfour, Bartolo Colon, Kurt Suzuki, and Chris Young

The A's are interested in bringing back Bartolo Colon, but after his rejuvenation in 2013, he might get some offers that lead him away from the frugal grasp of Oakland.

Needs

RP

Not much needs changing. Billy Beane just needs to figure out how to get his shit to work in the playoffs. He might consider adding a relievers or two, but the rotation is pretty deep and the position players seem to be set with Callaspo, Lowrie, and Eric Sogard as the moving parts in the infield. The outfield is well-stocked too, with Michael Choice stepping into Chris Young's spot and perhaps tapping into his first-round pedigree.

The bullpen could use another arm or two, but the A's might be able to find help within their own organization. Ryan Cook or Sean Doolittle will probably take over as closer.

Trade Pieces

Jemile Weeks, Brett Anderson, Eric Sogard, prospects

Beane isn't likely to move any prospects, so the most likely trade candidate is Anderson. He might not bring back anything that could help the club immediately, but the A's are always looking for ways to plan for the future. Jemile Weeks and Eric Sogard could be used as trade bait.

The Braves might be moving on from a few franchise icons this winter, but they can still compete in 2014 without them.

The Braves steamrolled their way throughout the regular season. They outpaced the World Series-winning Red Sox for most of the year, but didn't have quite enough left in October -- losing to the Dodgers three-games-to-one in the NLDS. Despite a dissatisfying end to the 2013 season, the Braves have a lot to build on from the season. Evan Gattis briefly emerged as a superior power threat and then regressed.

It's fair to assume Gattis' career will look a little more like the second half than the first. Still, a .400+ slugging percentage and a useable glove behind the plate could keep him in the Braves catching rotation, though the outfield experiment is likely over.

The Braves dealt with a few injuries, leading to an effort to get Gattis' bat in the lineup by playing him in left field -- where he was "worth" -10 DRS (defensive runs saved) in 342.1 innings.

Atlanta is hoping for less trips to the DL for their talented outfield. Though that doesn't mean Gattis is destined to to see fewer at bats in 2014. Longtime catcher Brian McCann is a free agent and offers are rumored to potentially reach nine figures. The Braves have Christian Bethancourt waiting for a chance at the job, but they may not feel as though he's ready for an extended stay in the majors, though a timeshare with Gattis is possible.

More Braves stuff from Talking Chop: Amazing Andrelton Simmons highlights

Free agents

Brian McCann, Tim Hudson, Scott Downs, Freddy Garcia, Paul Maholm, Eric O'Flaherty, Luis Ayala, Kameron Loe, and Reed Johnson

Two-fifths of their rotation, their franchise catcher, and a good chunk of their bullpen is set to hit the open market, so the Braves might be busy plugging the holes this winter. Garcia was a briefly valuable fill-in starter, but with Kris Medlen, Mike Minor, and Julio Teheran, Atlanta has a solid, young trio at the top of their rotation. Alex Wood and Sean Gilmartin might be the next wave of talent to blossom at Turner Field. Reed Johnson's option has already been declined.

Letting McCann and Hudson walk will be hard for Atlanta fans at first, but if the team uses the money that could be spent on aging veterans to acquire players entering their prime, they could benefit significantly in the future. Signing McCann especially might be tempting, but this team can still compete without him and what is sure to be a lucrative -- and more importantly, long -- contract.

Needs

2B, SP, RP

GM Frank Wren might be content to keep Dan Uggla in the starting lineup...well, not content -- resigned. Uggla hit .179 and unless the Royals decide they want him, he'll still be in Atlanta in 2014. The bullpen will still be strong with Craig Kimbrel, Anthony Varvaro, David Carpenter, and Luis Avilan, but Wren might want to add a veteran or two into the mix. In July, he said he "was willing to pay for [pitching]." If that is still the case, the Braves could end up making a splash in free agency for a starting pitcher.

Trade Pieces

Pitching prospects

Atlanta has several arms brushing up against the majors. In addition to Gilmartin and Wood, J.R. Graham, Cody Martin, and David Hale could see big league innings in 2014. In fact, eight of the top ten players on John Sickels' 2013 prospect list for Atlanta are pitchers, so they might feel comfortable parting with a few to improve for another postseason run next year.

It's going to be sad for Tampa to see David Price go, but they need to deal him this winter to get maximum value.

The Rays might have done a little bit too well the last time they were faced with trading an ace. GM Andrew Friedman appears to have won the James Shields trade with Wil Myers earning consideration for AL Rookie of the Year and set to be under team control until 2020.

On the Royals side of the deal, James Shields has been excellent, but will be a free agent after the season and they have an expensive predicament to deal with in Wade Davis' contract.

Friedman somehow swindled not only Myers, but Jake Odorizzi, Mike Montgomery, and Patrick Leonard for Shields, and more importantly he was able to rid himself of one of his rare mistakes.

Davis' contract rewards him as a starter, but his only real success has come in the bullpen. Neither Tampa Bay or Kansas City can afford to pay him what he's due as a middle reliever, so Friedman deserves recognition for seamlessly turning a bad choice into a trade chip.

But the fantastic (and creative) return he got from Shields might be hard to top when the Rays finally move David Price. Price is a better pitcher and has a better upside than Shields, but Price's next contract is looming, and it's going to be huge. The closer his free agency gets, the less teams will offer for his temporary services.

More Rays from DRays Bay: Gauging interest in David Price, Part 5

Free agents

Jesse Crain, Fernando Rodney, Roberto Hernandez, Jose Molina, Luke Scott, Kelly Johnson, James Loney, Jamey Wright, Delmon Young, and Juan Carlos Oviedo

The Rays have enough pitching prospects to mix and match in the bullpen and rotation that they shouldn't miss Rodney too much. But they'll likely scour the market for another reclamation or two, as they have made a habit of such signings in recent years. Jmes Loney will probably be the hardest guy to replace if the Rays can't find a way to bring him back. Loney was worth almost 3 wins, according to FanGraphs, so Friedman might face some serious competition for him. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times notes that Loney is expected to get something in the range of 2 years and $14M-$20M. At that price, he won't be back.

Needs

C, 1B, DH, RP

With Myers, Desmond Jennings and the newly signed David DeJesus, the Rays have their outfield settled. They could still use a bat from the right side if Matt Joyce is situated as their regular left-handed DH. Jose Lobaton and Jose Molina split the catching duties in 2013, but if Molina moves on, the Rays will need a capable backstop to spell Lobaton. Though the team's main concerns might be replacing their exiting free agents at 1B and in the bullpen.

Trade Pieces

Price, prospects

Since the Rays aren't likely to trade any major prospects, the only significant trade they're likely to make is a the one that sends Price off to a team with a more flexible budget. They will likely be looking for at least one major league-ready difference-maker in the deal, if not two or three. Friedman would probably love to add a catcher or a first baseman, but he isn't likely to limit the return on Price to prospects that fill an immediate need on the big club. Besides, you can never have too much pitching and their only position that is set in stone is Evan Longoria at third. Other than him, they can move players around -- which they love to do -- to get their best guys on the field.

The Pirates have arguably the best farm system in baseball, and they might use it -- one way or another -- in an attempt to return to the playoffs.

Pittsburgh was one of the best stories in baseball this season, earning their first trip to the postseason in 21 years. They rode strong pitching and the seemingly infinite superhumanity of Andrew McCutchen to a 94-68 regular season record and an NLDS appearance. They were able to take the Cardinals to a Game 5 in that series, but came up just short.

In order to keep themselves in a position to return to the postseason, the Pirates will need to plan for some regression from some of their younger players. That regression might not happen, but it would be wise for GM Neal Huntington to make adjustments that would lessen the blow if it does. The Pirates payroll is estimated to be somewhere around $55M after arbitration and new contracts for they remaining players. They brushed up against $80M in 2013, so they might have some room to add impact players as well as retaining their contributors from last season.

More Pirates stuff from Bucs Dugout: Pittsburgh will be more attractive to FAs

Free agents

A.J. Burnett, Justin Morneau, John Buck, Clint Barmes, Jeff Karstens, Kyle Farnsworth, Marlon Byrd, and Felix Pie

Burnett is mulling retirement, but if he does come back for 2014, it'll be in Pittsburgh. Morneau is unlikely to return due to his probable price tag. The Pirates will likely choose to invest more long-term solution if they end up spending a substantial amount of money at first base. Marlon Byrd was a welcome addition for Pittsburgh during their postseason run, but they might decide he isn't their best option to considerably improve their outfield.

Needs

RF, 1B, SS

Jordy Mercer filled in nicely for the Pirates this season at short, but his minor league stats suggest he could regress significantly. The Pirates could continue to use Gaby Sanchez and/or Garrett Jones at first, though Jones is a contender candidate and Sanchez' .361 OBP last season was well above anything he's done in the past. Right field is a spot the Pirates will likely target for improved offensive production, although Jose Tabata isn't a terrible back up plan.

Trade Pieces

Prospects, OF

The Pirates have the best minor league talent in baseball, according to MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo. The Pirates might decide to simply use that talent to help their big league club directly, specifically Jameson Taillon, who might contend for a spot in their rotation. Of course, it's a little more exciting to think about the established stars they could bring in with a combination of prospects and perhaps one of Jose Tabata, Andrew Lambo, or Travis Snider. For a significant target any potential deal would probably have to be headlined by Taillon, and the Pirates wouldn't likely balk at moving him for the right MLB player. They've been linked to Giancarlo Stanton in the past, but he is currently unavailable. They have the ammunition to target anyone they choose, up to and including David Price.

Detroit fell short again. And they have some major decisions to make in their efforts to get another shot next season. Good thing owner Mike Ilitch does't seem to mind dropping a couple hundred million dollars on his team.

A few of the key role players on the AL Central champs' roster are now free agents. And the Tigers will be bumping up against the league's luxury tax threshold of $189M very quickly this winter. If they decide they need to spend more than that to compete for a title, they'll pay a 17.5% tax on every extra dollar they spend as first-time offenders. On the other hand, if they attempt to stay under the tax they'll have limited options to replace their departing players and/or fill other holes in their roster.

Detroit boasts some of the top players in baseball, but they'll need a solid team throughout to get back to the postseason, let alone the World Series. No matter what happens this winter, look for the Tigers to be favored to win the Central in 2014.

More Tigers from Bless You Boys: Tigers 2014 roster decisions stream

Free agents

Jhonny Peralta, Omar Infante, Joaquin Benoit, Jose Veras, Octavio Dotel, Ramon Santiago, Jeremy Bonderman, and Brayan Pena

Since Jose Iglesias appears to be capable of actively channeling quantum superposition, Peralta isn't likely to be back. Seriously though, Iglesias went from second base (remember the shift was on for David Ortiz) to left-center field. Anyway, the real concern here is the bullpen. Bruce Rondon will probably spend more time in the majors next year. But if the Tigers let Benoit and Dotel go (in addition to Veras, whose option was already strangely declined), they might want to bring in an established reliever or two. The club could depend on homegrown options Melvin Mercedes, Jose Ortega, and perhaps Casey Crosby.

Lefty Phil Coke might also be on his way out. Omar Infante could sign an extension, but if he doesn't the team's best in-house replacement is probably Hernan Perez -- he isn't likely to produce Infante-caliber production immediately.

Needs

2B, RP, CL, LF, bench

They can fill a few of these holes by re-signing players and perhaps they'll decide Rondon is ready to close. If they don't bring Benoit and Infante back they'll be on the hunt for replacements there, but the number one concern might be finding a dynamic left fielder. They also need a back up catcher and might want to bring in a few solid bench contributors as well.

Trade Pieces

The Tigers could decide to use Nick Castellanos in left field -- which would be the prudent choice -- but they may decide he is their best bet at landing something useful on the trade market. If the Tigers attempt to make any moves via trade, teams will be asking about Castellanos first. GM Dave Dombrowski might see Rick Porcello as expendable with Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez, and Doug Fister holding down most of the rotation. Drew Smyly and Jose Alvarez could compete for the last spot if Porcello is moved, or Dombrowski could pick up a reclamation project/low-end starter via trade or free agency. The Tigers are not actively shopping Max Scherzer and would likely have to be astonished by an offer to consider moving him.

The Dodgers seem to be in on every available player on the market. And they seem to have no problem with paying a massive tax penalty for overspending. They might just keep making splashes until they bring home a title.

The Guggenheim Group is setting itself up to supplant the Steinbrenner family as the most free-spending patriarchs the world of baseball has ever seen. You could almost say both teams won the $250M+ trade between the Dodgers and Red Sox, but at this point it's pretty obvious a bigger win for Boston. They won the Series and have room to operate under the luxury tax, while Los Angeles will probably be paying penalties for the foreseeable future and they're committed to their end of the of the deal for several years.

But enough about that trade. The Dodgers are in a good position to compete despite the financial issues of the present and future. And they appear to be extremely dedicated to improving their roster, no matter the details.

They've already signed Cuban defector Alexander Guerrero to a four-year deal worth $28M and he seems to be slated to start at second base after the Dodgers declined Mark Ellis' option.

Free agents

Michael Young, Ricky Nolasco, Juan Uribe, Carlos Marmol, Jerry Hairston, Edinson Volquez, Skip Schumaker, Nick Punto, J.P. Howell, Brian Wilson, Mark Ellis, and Chris Capuano

The stars are all still there, but that's a long list of role players that might not be back next year. LA should be able to handle the losses in the rotation, especially if they bring in another starter this winter. They could go with Dee Gordon (who is practicing his outfield defense in the Dominican winter league) at shortstop, with Hanley Ramirez at third and Guerrero at second to complete their infield. But adding a player seems to be their only real option. They might opt to use Gordon as a versatile bench player/pinch runner, where he could provide some value, but the Son of Flash has struggled to find a regular role at the Major League level. The bullpen looks like it could use a little sprucing up too.

Needs

IF, Bench, RP

Even if GM Ned Colletti decides to go with Gordon at short, he will need quality reserves in the infield. Being able to supply manager Don Mattingly with a versatile group of players could go a long way toward helping the Dodgers get to the World Series. They can use some of their prospects in the bullpen, but could also look to the market for a solid lefty and depth.

Trade Pieces

OF, Pitching

They have four "starting" outfielders, but they might want to keep some kind of depth since Carl Crawford has a proclivity for injures. And they might no have a choice. They could try to move one of Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, or Crawford, but it won't be easy to get fair value in return considering those players' performance and cumbersome contracts. The Dodgers farm system has enough talent to land some significant talent on the trade market. It wouldn't be a stretch at all to assume LA would empty out their system for the right immediate contributor.
