The latest news from around the National League West

When the Diamondbacks went on their little spending spree this winter, a couple of their moves appeared to be sure things. Fans were excited about bringing in Zack Greinke to headline their rotation. Trading for Shelby Miller was a bit shocking, but it signaled that they were going for it.

Acquiring Jean Segura? Not a move fans were 100 percent behind. Now, looking back on that trade, the Diamondbacks look like geniuses. Segura leads the National League leadoff hitters in hits, total bases and is fifth in batting average with a .335 mark.

Good morning baseball fans!

The Oakland A's placed Sonny Gray on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right trapezius.

Speaking of the A's, they may be ready to shop some players, with Rich Hill and Danny Valencia atop the list.

Eno Sarris tried to figure out what is wrong with Matt Harvey.

Considering the fact that their pitching coach is a slider guru, maybe we can believe that Harvey will right ship on the slider shortly. Considering the fact that all pitchers lose velocity, maybe we can shrug at the velocity loss and say, we can still get a 27 year old version of Harvey back. It’s just a *little* worse than you’d expect, right?

So buck up, Matt Harvey, it’s probably not all that big a deal. Work on the slider some in the bullpen, get your body as right as it can be, and you can get this thing back on track.

Addison Russell is evolving into an elite shortstop.

Last season, Addison Russell's triumphs were primarily limited to the North Side of Chicago, in terms of their scope. There were flashes of the upper tier player that he could become, certainly, but it wasn't until early on this season that we're really seeing Addison Russell come into his own as a Major League shortstop. That growth is being noticed on a national level, thanks to his early season performance that has him out to 1.3 fWAR, setting him on a pace to eclipse his 2.9 mark from a year ago. While it's unlikely he'll recognize his full potential, which is vast, by year's end, this continued development should be yet another exciting element for a team that's already perhaps the most exciting in baseball.

The latest from around the American League East.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Pirates announced they signed catcher Francisco Cervelli to a three-year, $31 million extension.

Baltimore has a catcher, Matt Wieters, set to become a free agent at the end of the season. Wieters accepted a qualifying offer in November, but he will likely be paid well this off-season.

Cervelli batted .295 last season and received the deal worth $31 million, all guaranteed.

When Wieters accepted the qualifying offer, he likely did so hoping he would be able to prove he is valuable as a step toward a large contract. However, unless Wieters turns things around this summer, it's unlikely he will receive a Cervelli-type contract.

Good morning baseball fans!

Francisco Cervelli has become a rich man, inking a three-year extension with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The guy Cervelli replaced, Russell Martin, is struggling.

Martin hasn’t been a successful hitter in May, but those images there look more familiar. It looks like the force is coming back to his swing, and if that proves to be true, then at some point the results should follow. You’d want to make sure he’s not just trying to overcompensate. And you’d want to make sure he keeps this up — any discomfort might reappear. If he’s just randomly felt good for a few days, and he’s going to feel bad again soon, clearly that’s an issue. No one here is out of the woods. No one could ever be considered out of the woods with an 11 wRC+.

And it should go without saying that maybe I’m just full of crap. Wouldn’t be the first time. I’m just guessing at what’s been the matter, but we at least do know that something has been the matter. My guess, based on the evidence, is that Martin is starting to feel better, and pretty soon he’s going to hit a few dingers. When that finally happens, there’s going to be great relief. Today, as I write this, no one has yet felt relieved.

How about a piece on position players pitching? We all love those.

I think the conclusion I'm most comfortable with is that this is all quite silly, and that, when we're talking about 20 innings per year (if we're lucky), there are going to be some fluctuations that look meaningful and perhaps aren't. Even the bumps of 2014 and 2015 may have been ephemeral; so far, after nearly a quarter of 2016, position players have pitched in only two games and 1 2/3 innings, well below the pace of the previous years.

Managers are probably in a state of constant terror for their jobs and therefore extremely reluctant to do anything that hasn't already been done. They seem more comfortable putting position players onto the mound than they have been in the past, now that their peers won't think it's crazy; they also seem to enjoy it nearly as much as all of us do. Overanalyzing aside, we really are in an unprecedented age of 70MPH straightballs; best to enjoy it as long and as fully as possible.

The latest news from around the National League West.

The Padres have no time to waste in trying to move outfielder Matt Kemp, writes Eddie Brown of the San Diego Union Tribune. Brown says that Kemp's value is going to be at its peak right after the All-Star Break, and moving him will put the Padres in a better place.

It will give them the payroll flexibility that they will need, and it will open up some room for their two top outfield prospects, Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe.

Good morning baseball fans!

The Angels appear close to signing Tim Lincecum to a one-year deal.

In more Angels news, starter Garrett Richards has chosen to not have Tommy John surgery and instead will opt for a PRP injection and some rest.

How long with Rougned Odor be suspended for? Our own Chris Cotillo looked at some precedent to make a determination.

Ian Desmond has been a huge success for the Rangers.

Desmond has been a capable and versatile defensive outfielder. There was never a problem with his baserunning. His offense has rebounded in the early going, in large part because he’s been less willing than ever to go after the low-away pitch that would so consistently get him out. The power remains, and teammates have always loved him, and as I write this Desmond is just 30 years old. If he keeps this up, he’s going to be a hell of a free agent. If he keeps this up, the pillow contract will have worked out perfectly. Carlos Gomez‘s loss could be Ian Desmond’s gain. He could end up profiling similarly to Yoenis Cespedes, with less strength but with more glove.

So for Desmond’s future, this has been a wonderful month. And for Desmond’s present, he’s worked himself into being the starting center fielder on a first-place ballclub. You always have to see if adjustments survive a slump, but the early Ian Desmond has worked out flawlessly. A lot like how his old Nationals teammates predicted.

Here is the latest edition of The Rosterbatorical podcast, which talked about the Odor incident.

The Blue Jays claimed Jimmy Parades off of waivers.

Extending a general manager is risking business, but the White Sox and Mets should follow the Nationals lead and extend their GM's.

Mark Trumbo is off to a hot start, and it may be able to continue.

Naturally, if Trumbo's timing is optimized for fastballs, he'll be vulnerable to offspeed stuff. He has crushed changeups so far, but he's been vulnerable to sliders and curveballs, more so than last year.

Let's pull it all together. Trumbo appears to have made conscious decisions to avoid swinging at low pitches and to have better timing optimized for fastballs. The peripherals are that Trumbo is making a little less contact overall, but the pitches with which he is making contact are those he can pull for power and put in the air. He is also able to crush fastballs even more.

The final results are likely exactly what he wants. Trumbombs. Lots and lots of Trumbombs. It'll be interesting to see if/how pitchers adjust.
